The Winkler Elementary School Youth in Philanthropy group recently gave a boost to Salem Home's latest construction project.

Grade seven and eight students raised money throughout the year, which was matched by the Winkler Community Foundation for a total of $591.

Madhura Animalla says the students did "It's not a lot but our students did fantastic," they cared for the senior citizens, they were thinking of their grandmas and grandpas."

Grade seven student Jamie Reimer says they chose Salem, "because the residents deserve something good."

Tahlia Enns adds they held bake sales and a family movie night to raise the funds, together with the other 21 members of the YIP group. "We did as much as we could."

Officials turned sod on Salem Home's new $325,000 dining room in May. The 1,100 sq ft addition will provide space for 24 care home residents.

The YIP committee also donated $591 to Eden Foundation's counselling department. "Counselling gives hope for a better future to the people suffering from mental health problems. It changes lives in a positive manner," Animalla explains.
