Sheldon Kennedy won a Memorial Cup, World Junior Gold Medal and skated for three teams in his eight-year NHL career, but is best known for his courageous decision to speak out about his Major Junior Hockey league coach who sexually abused him over a five year period while a teenager under his care.

Sheldon’s decision to go to the authorities about this began a journey which led him to becoming a leader in advocating for victims rights and protecting children.

He spoke at the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation annual fundraising banquet Friday at Morden’s Access Event Centre. Morning Show Co-Host Chris Sumner MC’d the event, and talked to Sheldon about the changes he’s helped bring about.

Sheldon also spoke about what it means to him, nearly two decades later, to still have the chance to speak for kids who haven’t found their voice yet.

And let’s keep in mind it was nearly twenty years ago Sheldon roller bladed across the country to raise awareness about childhood abuse, and raise money for abuse prevention initiatives.
