Rylan Metcalf of Carman Collegiate and Victoria Tachinski of Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg are the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association's 2016-2017 Athletes of the Year.

“I was extremely honoured,” said Metcalf at Wednesdays news conference in Winnipeg. “I felt very thankful. Sports keeps you involved and you make a lot of friendships.”

Metcalf participated in volleyball, hockey, basketball, badminton and track & field.

The Cougars won the Provincial “AA” High School varsity volleyball, hockey and basketball championships.

Metcalf was named the MVP of the volleyball championship and was an all-star at the hockey and basketball provincials.

He was the student council president, played the lead role in the school's drama production, a Grade 7 gym class volunteer and a referee & scorekeeper for volleyball and basketball.

Metcalf, who was the recipient of the Garret Lee Sidor Memorial Award for basketball and the McDonald's Leadership Award, will be playing volleyball at the University of Regina this fall.

Tachinski participated in basketball, hockey, track & field, and cross country.

She was a member of the Provincial “AAAA” finalist team for basketball and was named a provincial all-star and a graduating all-star.

Tachinski was a West Winnipeg Athletic Conference meet champion for cross country and won gold in the 400 & 800 meters at the 2017 Provincial High School Track & Field championships.

Metcalf and Jessica Edel of Morris School were named the “AA” Athletes of the Years.

“I wasn't expecting it at all,”said Edel. “It was a surprise but it's also a huge honour. Out of all of Manitoba – it's crazy.”

Edel participated in volleyball, basketball, soccer and track & field.

She was captain of both the volleyball and basketball teams and was the Players Choice Award winner at both provincial championships.

Edel was also a graduating all-star player in both sports and was awarded with the McDonald's Leadership Award, the Ron Meyers Leadership Award and was named a Credit Unions Manitoba Scholar Athlete.

The Morris School graduate will be playing volleyball at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg this fall.

The “A” Players of the Year were Georgia-Rae Maxwell of Elton Collegiate and Riley Rutherford of Glenboro School.

The “AAA” Athletes of the Year were Renee Desroches of Dauphin Regional Secondary School and Jonathan Miranda of St. Maurice School.

Cole Penner of Garden City Collegiate was the “AAAA” Male Athlete of the Year.
