It was too little too late for the Winkler Flyers in a 3-2 loss in Selkirk on Tuesday night. Coltyn Bates pulled Winkler to within a goal late in regulation but the equalizer would not come as the Flyers drop their second consecutive game.

Back on the road for the third straight game, the Flyers were looking to get back on track after losing 3-2 in OCN on Saturday night. Tuesday’s game was the third meeting of the year against Selkirk, with the Flyers and Steelers splitting their first two head to head games in Winkler.

The Flyers took a bit to get going against the Steelers and it would cost them, as the home side jumped out to a 2-0, first period lead. Winkler rebounded with a power-play goal early in the second frame as Captain Nolan McGuire took a centering pass from Will Blake and cut Selkirk’s lead to 2-1 with his team leading 16th goal of the season.

Unfortunately for Winkler, the Steelers would regain their two goal lead nearly four minutes later and the Flyers trailed heading into the third period for just the second time all season.

Winkler played much better in the final period and with 3:36 left on the clock, Matt Christian and Brett Opperman would assist on Coltyn Bates’ ninth goal of the season, cutting the Steelers lead to 3-2. The comeback effort was thrust into high gear with rookie goaltender Aaron Brunn on the bench in favor of the extra attacker in the final two minutes. But in the end, the Flyers couldn’t capitalize on the chances, ringing two shots off the post in the final 30 seconds and being forced to settle for the one goal loss.

Aaron Brunn played well in goal for Winkler and made 33 saves in the loss as both clubs finished with 36 shots on goal.

The Flyers (14-5-0) will return home to face the Swan Valley Stampeders on Saturday, November 11th. Puck drop at the Winkler Recreation Complex is 7:30pm.
