Josh Kagan scored this third goal of the season with the 25 seconds left in overtime as the Winkler Flyers slid past the Dauphin Kings 2-1 on Friday night, increasing their point streak to eight games. Riley Morgan was fantastic between the pipes for Winkler stopping 32 of the 33 shots he faced, moving the Orange and Black into third place in the MJHL Standings.

Starting a stretch of three road games in three days, the Flyers made their way to Dauphin to face the Kings for the second time in a week. Looking to keep their recent hot streak going, the Flyers turned to goaltender Riley Morgan who hadn’t played since beating Virden on October 16th.

Morgan was tested early as the Kings got the early jump on the Flyers but the Winkler netminder kept the game scoreless through the first 20 minutes. Winkler got on the board first just past the eight minute mark of the second period when second year forward Everett Bestland finished off a beautiful passing play which included Eric Dahl and Colton Friesen and the Flyers had a 1-0 lead thanks to the Brunkild native’s first goal of the season.

Due in large part to the play of their goaltender, Winkler carried their one goal lead well into the third. With their goaltender on the bench in favour of the extra attacker, the Kings went hunting for the equalizer late in regulation and with just six seconds left on the clock the home team finally found the back of the Winkler net with a screened shot from the blueline and the game would head to overtime tied 1-1.

Now in overtime for the third straight game and the ninth time already through their first 17 games of the season, the Flyers would pick up the extra point with just 25 seconds left in the fourth period. After taking the pass in the neutral zone from Garrett Kuklica, Josh Kagan entered the Dauphin zone, cut to the middle of the ice and wired the game winner into the top corner.

Riley Morgan was the real star of the game for the Flyers, stopping 32 of the 33 shots he faced picking up his third win in a row. The Kings outshot the Flyers 33-26 overall. The Flyers went 0-for-2 on the power-play and 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill. The Flyers improved their overtime record to 7-0-2 and 8-1-2 in games decided by a single goal.

Winkler (10-5-2) will continue their road trip Saturday night in Virden (3-8-5). Puck drop at Tundra Oil and Gas Place in Virden is 7:30pm with Matt Friesen’s pregame show getting underway on Country 88 and online at www.pembinavalleyonline.com at 7:25pm. The Flyers are 2-0 against Virden this season
