The Winkler Flyers fired 46 shots on goal on Saturday night, but fell 3-0 to the Selkirk Steelers at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Despite generating a significant number of chances, the Flyers offensive struggles continued as the club failed to record a goal for the third time in their last four games.

Coming off a loss to the visiting Steinbach Pistons on Tuesday night, in a game where the Flyers played good enough to win, the Orange and Black came out of the gate flying against Selkirk. Despite registering 22 shots on goal in the first, the Flyers failed to score and went into the first intermission tied 0-0.

Winkler started the middle frame well but gave up the first goal of the night just over three minutes into the period when Blake Burr deposited a rebound past goaltender Britt League. Not even three minutes later, Carter Barley doubled the Steelers’ lead to 2-0 and six minutes after that Selkirk scored another rebound goal on the power-play to hold a 3-0 lead with half the game still to play.

Following the theme of their last few games, the Flyers certainly earned their chances throughout the rest of the game but failed to see any results as they would go on to lose the game 3-0 thanks in large part to Selkirk goaltender Levi Mitchell who was the star of the game for the home side.

Britt League took the loss in goal for Winkler as they outshot Selkirk 46-37 overall. Winkler went 1-for-3 on the power-play and 3-for-4 on the penalty-kill.

The Flyers will take on the OCN Blizzard on Sunday night at the Seven Oaks Arena in Winnipeg as part of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase. Puck drop is 7:30pm with Matt Friesen’s broadcast on Country 88.9FM and online at www.pembinavalleyonline.com getting underway at 7:25pm.
