For the second straight night, the Winkler Flyers offense was in fine form in a 7-1 win over the Dauphin Kings. Twenty four hours after beating the visiting Wayway Wolverines 7-1, the Flyers picked up right where they left off while earning their third straight victory.

Playing at home for the second straight night, the Flyers welcomed the Kings who were fresh off a Friday night loss in Steinbach and still looking for their first win of the season.

It was another good start for the Orange and Black as they took the play to the Kings in the opening minutes. The Flyers opened the scoring not even five minutes into the game when Weiland Parrish found a loose puck in the crease and gave Winkler a 1-0 lead. Coltyn Bates and Matt Christian increased their point streaks to five games with the assists.

That trio connected not even two minutes later on the power-play as Bates and Christian found Parrish for the one-timer and the twenty year old had his second of the game. After going 4-for-4 on the man advantage against Waywayseecappo on Friday, Winkler’s power-play kept rolling with yet another goal in the first.

After taking the pass from defenseman Mitch Dyck, Will Blake fed it over the Nolan McGuire who picked the top corner for his league leading sixth goal of the year. Flyers’ goaltender Troy Martyniuk had a strong opening 20 minutes allowing his team to take a three goal lead into the intermission despite being outshot 11-10 in the period.

The Kings fought back in the second period and cut into Winkler’s lead with their first goal, 10:57 into the period. It didn’t take the Flyers long to get that one back as Coltyn Bates beat Kings’ goaltender Albert Adamsen just 35 seconds later with his fourth goal of the season. Matt Christian and Mitch Dyck drew the assists. That would be the only offense in the middle frame as Winkler took a 4-1 lead into the third.

Any chance of a Dauphin comeback was snuffed out as Winkler put the game away in the third, scoring three more times and outshooting the Kings 12-5 in the final 20 minutes. After scoring his first goal of the season on Friday, Brody Moffatt scored 2:35 into the third to extend Winkler’s lead to 5-1. Brett Opperman earned his third point in his last two games with an assist and Owen Wiebe helped as well to earn his first point as a Flyer.

With 6:43 left in regulation Owen Wiebe and Matt Krawiec assisted on Trent Halfdanson’s first MJHL goal as the rookie forward sent a wrist shot past the glove hand of Adamsen to push Winkler ahead by five goals.

Things got a little rough near the end of regulation as Winkler was given a five minute power-play after Kings forward Matt Bartel received a blow to the head penalty, after checking Flyers’ defenseman Owen Wiebe behind the net. The Flyers would make the Kings pay though as Will Blake banged home Nolan McGuire’s cross crease pass during the ensuing power-play and the Flyers had a 7-1 lead thanks to their third power-play goal of the game. Defenseman Mitch Dyck also picked up his third point of the game on Blake’s first goal of the season.

Troy Martyniuk improved his record to 2-2, stopping all but one of the 28 shots he faced. Winkler outshot Dauphin 33-28. Winkler was 3-for-5 on the power-play and 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill. During the Flyers’ three game winning streak they have scored on eight of their eleven power-plays and have outscored their opponent 18-4.

The Flyers (3-2) will conclude their busy three game weekend Sunday night in Winnipeg (1-3). Puck drop at Bell/MTS Iceplex is 6:30pm.
