The Pembina Valley Hawks scored two goals in a span of 10 seconds in the second period en route to a 3-1 win over the Eastman Selects in game one of the Manitoba Female "AAA" Midget Hockey League's best-of-five championship final.

"Not getting the first goal is hard, but fighting back to get those two quick ones gives us an advantage," said Hawks forward Breanna Millions who scored the second goal in the second period.

"It wasn't a pretty goal, but as long as it goes in it counts," added Millions.

After a scoreless first period, the Selects got on the board in the first minute of the second period when Chelsea Dinnin banged home a rebound past Hawks goaltender Halle Oswald who made 36 saves in the win for Pembina Valley. Then at the 12:50 mark, the Hawks tied the game with a nice tip in front of the net by Hannah Petrie on the powerplay, with Cora Fijala and Kaila Powell picked up the assists on the tally. Then ten seconds later Pembina Valley busted into the Selects zone and Millions was able to find the back of the net to put the defending champion Hawks up by one.

"It's always nice to get that first one under your belt and get momentum going in the game too," said Pembina Valley Coach Dana Bell. "I thought we started off a little shaky, but found our wheels mid-way through the second period and kept pushing hard."

The Hawks held on to their one-goal lead until the end of the third period and Makenzie McCallum added an insurance marker into an empty net with roughly half a minute left.

Pembina Valley will now travel to St. Anne for game two Thursday night with puck drop at 6:30 p.m. and the series will return back to Morden for game three Saturday evening.

"Go back to our game plan, stick to an aggressive forecheck and get pucks to the net for sure," said Bell when asked for the key to success in game two.

The MFMHL also announced their league awards with Hawks goaltender Halle Oswald picking up the league MVP and Top Goaltender, while the Top Scorer award went to Pembina Valley captain Sage McElroy-Scott.

Also announced was the first and second team all-stars. Representing the Hawks on the first team was Makenzie McCallum, McElroy-Scott, and Oswald and the lone representative from Pembina Valley on the 2nd all-star team is forward Hanna Petrie.
