Graduating forward Ian Mackey has committed to the Simon Fraser University Clan (BCIHL) for the 2017-2018 season. The Tower Lakes, Illinois native played one season in Winkler after starting his junior hockey career in Portage.

“I chose to come to SFU because it was a great school from an educational standpoint and also thought it was a great place to play hockey,“ said Mackey. “They have always had very competitive, winning teams here and i am really looking forward to starting the season.”

Mackey recorded 31 points (10 goals – 21 assists) and 111 penalty minutes in 57 regular season games last season with the Flyers. The 6’3”, 185lbs forward also provided great leadership after winning the MJHL Championship the year before with the Terriers.

“We’ve never been the biggest team with our forward group, and bringing in Ian addresses that in a big way,” said SFU Head Coach Mark Coletta. “We expect him to be a physical presence and he has a great opportunity to be in our line-up every night”.

SFU Men’s Hockey was re-established in 2004 and competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League. The program focuses on competition, academics, and community service as its core values.

Mackey joins D Connor Hamonic (Wisconsin-Superior – NCAA Div III), D Lawson McDonald (University of Nebraska-Omaha – NCAA Div I), D Tyler Jubenvill (Bemidji State – NCAA Div I) and D Tyler Lindstrom (Currey College – NCAA Div III) as committed players from the 2016-2017 Flyers roster.
