The 2018 recipient of the Esso Cup Scholarship worth $2,000 is Hannah Petrie.

The Carman product recorded 24 goals and 32 assists in 63 games this past season with the Manitoba Female AAA Midget Hockey League's Pembina Valley Hawks.

This year’s applicants were asked to provide a list of their community and school involvement, a reference letter, an academic transcript, and an essay outlining the important life lessons and/or benefits that hockey has given them.

Petrie has an impressive list of extra-curricular involvement in both her school and community while maintaining stellar marks in all of her high school courses.

In her essay she outlined how the most important thing about hockey for her is the sense of community and belonging that hockey brings.

Petrie plans to attend Red Deer College this fall to play hockey and to take courses in the Bachelor of Education Elementary program.

The Pembina Valley region hosted the Esso Cup National Female Midget Championship in Morden in April 2017.

The host committee was fortunate to generate a legacy fund that can be used to promote the development of female hockey in the region.

As part of this legacy, the host committee is offering up to $2000 in scholarships to graduating players of the Pembina Valley Female Hawks AAA Midget team that are planning to attain a post-secondary education.

The 2017 recipients were Mackenzie Hutchinson, Katie Heppner and Erin Doherty.
