The Pembina Valley Hawks are 2016-2017 Manitoba Female “AAA” Midget Hockey League champions.

Hannah Petrie scored 2:03 into double overtime to lift the Hawks past the Westman Wildcats 2-1 Sunday in Hartney.

“Honestly I didn't think it went in,” said Petrie who also scored the winner in game two. “But then everyone came rushing and I was like 'Yes'. It was very exciting.”

Pembina Valley swept the best-of-five final in three straight.

Makenzie McCallum also scored for the Hawks who ran the table in the playoffs.

Pembina Valley went 9-0 and captured their first league title in three years.

Halle Oswald made 32 saves in game three.

“I knew it was going to be a tough one,” said Oswald who recorded four shutouts in the post-season and allowed just seven goals in nine games. “They've got some really strong players but I did my job.”

Wildcats captain Ashton Bell had the lone Westman goal.

“It was a barn burner,” said Hawks head coach Dana Bell. “We knew Westman wasn't going to give up. We knew they weren't going to lay down.”

“We just kept telling the girls, 'We're a second place team. We got no pressure and we got no expectations. Come in, play our game, work hard and it will pay off in the end.' And that's exactly what they did. They never quit for 60 minutes, 80 minutes, whatever it went today, they never quit. They kept working hard and getting pucks to the net.”

It's the seventh time the Hawks have won the MFMHL title.

Pembina Valley will host the 2017 Esso Cup National Female “AAA” Midget Hockey Championship April 23-29 in Morden.
