Three Garden Valley Zodiacs basketball teams will be competing in the Provincial AAAA High School Championships after defeating the Vincent Massey Vikings of Brandon in interzone games last week.

The GVC varsity girls defeated Vincent Massey 81-58 and will face the Daniel McIntyre Maroons Friday at 6 p.m. at Oak Park High School. The winner will meet the second seed Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg in the quarterfinals.  Garden Valley is seeded 10th at the Provincials.

The Zodiacs and Maroons met back in December in the 9th place game at the Pembina Trails Bison Classic Tournament in Winnipeg and GVC coach Dan Forte is looking forward to the rematch.

"We beat them by six. It's defense and rebounding. They're a good team and their strength is offensive rebounding and attacking in the paint. We got to be able to keep them out of the paint and keep them off the glass. The girls should be able to if not win, at least give them a good game in the opener."

The GVC varsity boys outscored Vincent Massey 87-77 and will meet the John Taylor Pipers Friday at 4 p.m. at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate. The winner will take on the second seed Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg in the quarterfinals. Garden Valley is seeded 7th at the Provincials.

"We've talked in the last little while about how we were happy with how our season has gone but we're not satisfied yet," said Zodiacs coach Walter Giesbrecht. "They were excited to take it another step but we know there is more work to be done."

The GVC junior varsity girls downed Vincent Massey 53-27 and will meet the Sisler Spartans today (7 p.m.) at Elmwood High School. The winner will face the third seed Lord Selkirk Royals in the quarterfinals. Garden Valley is seeded 11th at the Provincials.

"We believe defense wins championships which we have two again this year," said Zodiacs coach Mark Hamm. "Offensively we play almost like street ball. We use our team, go move around, shoot when we're open and go rebound if we miss."
