Winkler officials are hoping the latest installation will stick out to local rec fans.

The new jumbo hockey stick in front of the arena is not only a replacement for the former electronic sign, but a perfect way to create buzz for the upcoming National Women's Under-18 Hockey Championship in Winkler and Morden next week. The event takes place in both communities and is hosted by co-chairs Jordan Driedger and Clare Agnew.

Driedger says the structure is the perfect compliment to Morden's giant puck nestled in as the "O" in their "MORDEN" sign.

The steel hockey stick was a partnership between Meridian Manufacturing, Steel Tree and the City of Winkler. Meridian's Andrew Froese explains the 65 ft. stainless steel hockey stick is just under 3,000 lbs. He notes the staff loved working on such a unique project.

Meanwhile, Driedger says preparations, volunteers and sponsorships are in place for the tournament. "Now it's just last-minute details."

"The players that are coming to town, their goal is to play at a higher level of hockey, this is where they get noticed," Driedger says. "The scouts are going to be here, this is a very important tournament for them and their hockey careers."

The National Women's Under-18 Championship kicks off Tuesday, November 5. Tickets are available HERE.
