Participants in the Bench for the Cure event pumped serious iron for a great cause last week. The event took place October 31, inviting anyone to stop by the Muscle Hut to put in their reps in a number of weight categories to win prizes and raise money for the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation.
Muscle Hut Owner Kurtis Fox explains the leader boards continue to change throughout the day, "people came in and a little bit of a competitive edge comes out and you try to beat the last guy on the board."
Participants paid $2 per repetition and the highest rep per division, from lifting just the bar at 45 lbs to a lifting 225 lbs, walked away prizes like supplements and performance centre memberships. The winner of the 45 lbs did an impressive 125 reps, "so that was quite something, he was shaking pretty good," Fox says.
The winning number for the heaviest category was 36 reps. In total supporters put in 1,224 reps and helped raise $2,448 in just three hours of bench pressing. The money will be allocated for the equipment fund for the palliative care rooms at BTHC.
"It was great, definitely a true testament to our community within Muscle Hut, a lot of people bringing by friends and family," Fox explains, adding with the success of event they are already looking forward to holding similar events in the future.
