A news conference was held today to announce some long awaited news. It was announced an expansion is in the works for Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC).
Pat Gibson is the chair for the Action Committee for Expansion to BTHC. She says after many months of research and due diligence, and support from Southern Health-Santé Sud RHA, it was determined they could free up a lot of space for patient care within Boundary Trails if they moved the support services elsewhere.
Boundary Trails Health Centre opened in 2001 and since then has rapidly outgrown allocated space in all areas and services.
Gibson says plans are in motion for a three phase expansion, which will begin with construction of a Patient Support Service Centre to be built Northeast of the hospital. Once support services are moved into the new building, Phase two would begin, which would see renovations to allow for an expansion for Chemotherapy, Post op Clinics or Ambulatory care, and the Emergency Department. Phase three would see additional obstetrical and rehab beds added on the northwest side of the hospital.
"Here's the exciting news. I am here today to tell you that we have completed a definition for these three phases and that now the hard work begins," said Gibson. "The Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation has agreed that they will take our information and proceed to implement the plan. This includes hiring an individual right away who will complete the required stages of design so that construction can begin." Gibson adds this person will also be the first to give the initial cost analysis for this building.
The hope is to have shovels in the ground by the end of next year. "I believe that we can get the required segments completed for construction prior to the end of 2017," notes Gibson.
