The Rural Municipality of Rhineland is providing financial support toward the expansion of Blue Sky Opportunities in Altona.
Blue Sky plans to construct a new recycling facility at a new location in the Altona Industrial Park.
Council has agreed to donate $10,000 a year for five years toward Blue Sky's planned move into the industrial park. Reeve Don Wiebe says the issue generated good discussion among councillors.
"The discussion centred on Blue Sky's business case and whether that plan supported its operational and capital costs," said Wiebe. "We felt our financial commitment would provide some impetus to complete the project and at the same time provide meaningful support in getting the building up and running."
Wiebe says it obvious Blue Sky needs a larger facility to accommodate a rapidly growing recycling operation especially in terms of meeting the recycling needs of the municipality.
"The current facility is inadequate and the operation could certainly use an upgrade and we support their plans because Blue Sky is critical to our strategic landfill issues. We would like to divert as much material as possible from the local landfill because it makes good environmental sense. So, for those reasons we agreed to support Blue Sky."
Blue Sky's fundraising campaign is rapidly closing in on its $950,000 target which means construction on the new recycling facility could begin in fall.
