A 73-year-old man was able to escape his sinking pickup truck this morning after driving off a bridge.

Morden RCMP report the incident occurred at a bridge on Road 18W, three kilometres north of Homewood, MB.

The pickup truck was southbound when the trailer being pulled slid while going around a corner. The trailer pulled the truck into the railing and both went over and into the water.

The truck broke through the ice and began to sink.

However, a vehicle travelling behind the truck witnessed the accident and immediately called 911.

The driver, a 73-year-old man from St. Claude, managed to remove himself from the vehicle and get to shore where a passing motorist offered his assistance by keeping the driver warm until Emergency Services arrived. The driver was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers from the Morden RCMP Detachment continue to investigate.

STARS Air Ambulance was also dispatched to the scene but stood down prior to landing on scene.
