A hot and somewhat humid weekend ahead for the Pembina Valley has Environment Canada warning area residents about the importance of staying hydrated, and watching for signs of Heat Exhaustion.

Above seasonal temperatures are expected over Southern Manitoba this weekend as a hot and humid air mass moves into the province. In a Special Weather Advisory issued Friday afternoon for the Red River Valley and Southeastern Manitoba, Environment Canada stated,  although temperatures and humidex values are expected to remain below heat warning criteria for Southern Manitoba, it is important to remember extreme heat affects everyone.

The weather forecasting service also noted scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop Saturday afternoon across much of Southern Manitoba. Current indications are some may become severe over the course of the day. These thunderstorms will taper off Saturday evening, but the potential for more active weather will continue across the region on both Sunday and Monday.

“If you’re planning any outdoor activities this weekend, especially if you’re going to be outside at the Manitoba Sunflower Festival in Altona for any length of time, be sure to pack lots of water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and seek shade periodically,” added CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “As for the severe thunderstorm threat, a cold front moving across the province Saturday will be the trigger for any potential activity that develops. The hot, humid airmass in place over the region will provide the ingredients necessary, but what the exact storm coverage may be still remains to be seen.”
