On Sunday, Winkler Police responded to a motor vehicle accident that had occurred along Main Street.

Police attended to the scene and learned that a car traveling northbound had attempted to pass another vehicle. In the process the 16 year old female driver lost control of the vehicle.

The car then slid over the curb and knocked over a light pole. Police say mechanical failure may have contributed to the accident.

Below is the weekly Winkler Police Report from August 14-20

August 14

A report was received of someone burning garbage in a nearby backyard. Police attended and noted that construction material was being burned. Police spoke with the homeowners and instructed them to extinguish the fire and advised them of the City By-Law regarding burning refuse. The homeowners were compliant.

August 15

Police received a report of a stolen trailer from Hi-Way Groceteria. Police learned that a moving trailer was rented for two days from a female on August 1st who stated she was moving to Brandon. The store advised the female the trailer needed to be returned to Hi-Way Groceteria, as it is the store’s property. As of August 20th, the trailer has not yet been returned and staff at the store have not been able to reach the suspect female by phone. This file is still under investigation. August 16

Police were notified of a domestic incident in progress and were requested to attend. Upon arrival, police learned that a couple had been arguing. The boyfriend had attempted to leave his girlfriend's home with the couple's young child and assaulted her in the process. The 22 year old male, a resident of Winkler, was subsequently placed under arrest for Assault and later released on a Promise to Appear with common domestic related conditions.

Police received a report of a small car driving on the north sidewalk of Pembina Avenue. No other description of the vehicle was provided. Police attended the scene but the vehicle was gone on arrival.

A complaint was received of a truck driving erratically on the parking lot of a church. Police attended to the scene but were unable to locate the vehicle.

August 17

Police received a complaint of a male and female who appeared to be fighting near the complainant's residence. Police attended and it was determined that the couple was in the process of ending their relationship but no threats or assault had occurred.

A report was received regarding possible vandalism to a vehicle. The complainant stated his wife attended the Winkler Centennial Library and parked her vehicle on the parking lot. When she returned to the vehicle she found that the rear window had been shattered but was still intact. Police are investigating the cause of the damage.

At approximately 7:20pm, police received a report of a male who had just left Landmark Cinemas and appeared to be intoxicated. Police attended to the Southland Mall and located the male inside another store. Police found the male to be unsteady on his feet, have bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a strong odour of liquor on his breath. The male was arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and lodged for the night. He was released the following morning once sober.

A complaint was received advising of a male who may be intoxicated entering a vehicle with the intent to drive. Police attended to the area but were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.

August 18

A report was received from a female advising that her teenage son was at home and told her someone was in the house. Police attended to the home and learned that the complainant's son heard two people inside the home talking about rental prices. Police also learned that the mother was moving out of the rental property. It was later determined that the home was being shown to potential renters, and that no break and enter had occurred.

August 19

Police received a report of a grey truck that was chasing the complainant and his friends at the Winkler Aquatic Centre. The complainant stated they were at the basketball court when the truck parked on the court. The group told the driver the basketball court was not a parking lot, at which time the male exited his truck and approached the complainant in a threatening manner. The group then left, and were unable to provide a license plate or any other descriptors of the vehicle. Police patrolled the area but were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.

August 20

Shortly before 1:30am, police received a complaint of a party with loud music. Police attended to the scene and noted loud music coming from inside the building. Police spoke with the resident hosting the party and advised them to turn off the music for the night and keep their voices down. Cooperation was received from all.
