The team at the Altona Clinic is working to bring an ultrasound machine to the local hospital emergency room.

Dr. Kyle Winning works out of the clinic and also serves as Chief of Staff at the Altona Community Memorial Health Centre.

He says this machine has become a fundamental piece of equipment in all emergency rooms and help doctors diagnose and prescribe treatment options for a number of conditions including blood clots, abdominal aneurysms, pneumonia, abdominal pain, fractures, and tendon injuries, just to name a few. It will also provide extra peace of mind to pregnant mothers in emergency situations.

According to a news release, the teams says not only will the ultrasound be another relevant tool for local doctors, but will play a role in the recruitment and retention of physicians in Altona.

"We're very excited to try and get this," said Winning, adding several physicians have already been trained to use the ultrasound and a few more volunteering to gain further instruction.

In order to pay for this equipment, the team has embarked on a fundraising campaign and is well on the way to hitting its $60,000 goal.

Thanks to private and corporate donations, $46,500 has already been generated.

Connie Friesen, office manager at the clinic, says they'll be looking further to the community to make up the difference.

"So that we have this great tool in the emergency room to treat their emergencies," she added.

Sponsors already on board with the campaign include Friesens Corporation, The Altona & District Health Board, Green Valley Equipment, Sun Valley Co-op, Pembina Valley Pharmacy, Rexall, Rhineland Car, West Park Motors as well as personal donations from each of the doctors.
