Members of the Altona Elks lodge are waiting to hear how they faired in a national food drive competition. The local club went door-to-door in the community gathering non-perishable food donations for the Rhineland and Area Food Bank with the hope of collecting the most pounds of all participating lodges across Canada.

Rheina Schellenberg says the November effort was held in conjunction with Volunteer Month and Elks of Canada Awareness Month.

"It's just a bit of healthy competition and also just to get the Elks name out there to people who may not be aware of what we do or where we are situated."

Overall, the Altona Elks raised 1,537 pounds of food and Schellenberg says they are waiting to hear where this total places the club in the national rankings.

"Right now it's still a secret, we don't know how we compared, we're hoping we did alright for a small community," she noted.

Schellenberg says Lodge members are just pleased that people in the community were still willing to donate to the effort, despite numerous food drives having already taken place this fall.

"For the most part people were very willing to go through their cupboards and grab stuff for us...I'd say the majority of the doors we knocked on were more than willing to give us a few items from their pantry. It was a good turnout."
