The tender has been awarded for the Altona/Rhineland landfill upgrade and it's coming in under budget.

The estimated cost to expand the cell and raise the perimeter of the landfill was about $1.4 million and Altona Mayor Melvin Klassen said three bids came in under $800,000. Ultimately, the winning bid was for $706,660 from Brunet Construction which Klassen noted will be using multiple local sub-contractors to help get the job done.

The project was also granted $100,000 in federal/provincial funding thanks to the New Building Canada's Small Communities Fund. Klassen explained that this means the Town of Altona and Municipality of Rhineland will essentially split the $600,000 difference.

Klassen is hopeful that work will get started in September with the project wrapping up by the end of the year.
