Parents of Altona Minor Hockey players have been feeling the stress that comes along with volunteering at the canteen in the Millennium Exhibition Centre.

Throughout the hockey season, it is up to the parents to service the canteen during games for Senior Maroons, W.C. Miller Collegiate Aces, and minor hockey teams. Each parent involved donates three to four of their evenings each year.

After hearing the response from parents, Altona Minor Hockey (AMH) executives sent out a survey to find a solution.

President Jason Pilkington said the biggest question the survey aimed to answer was whether AMH should continue to run the canteen or if they should introduce an outside provider.

Most parents agreed that the hockey organization should keep the canteen, and strategize ways to balance the workload.

Some of the solutions suggested were rebates for parents who worked extra shifts or the option to buy out of a shift, in which the money would then go toward hiring external helpers or high school students.

The AMH has not yet decided what steps they will take to even out the work, but they will continue to service the canteen.

In the meantime, they are looking for ways to increase revenue, including raising prices, asking for sponsorship from local businesses, or adding new items to the canteen.
