An artist from Brandon is being featured in this fall's collection of work at Gallery in the Park.

Curator Susie Fisher contacted Brandon artist Weiming Zhao, which is the reason for Zhao's first visit to Altona.

"When I took my first trip here I couldn't believe what I saw. The gallery is just unbelievable, beautiful, and it was surrounded by such a beautiful sculpture garden," said Zhao.

His painting of rural landscapes started about 15 years ago in Brandon.

"I started to paint just on a daily basis, throughout the seasons... regardless of rain or shine I always stepped out to paint," said Zhao.

Zhao moved from China to Brandon 27 years ago to study at Brandon University. He had sent out applications across Canada, and Brandon was the first to respond.

Zhao telling gallery visitors about his art.

"In 1989, because of one political incident in China.... when that happened I decided I don't want to live in China anymore," said Zhao.

The artist says he finds joy and relaxation in painting.

"The light and colour is what defines the landscape," said Zhao. "With the seasons, or within the span of one day, it just makes what you see totally different."

Zhao noted he's worked two full-time jobs for over 20 years, supporting his wife and child, who joined him in Canada after 5 years of being apart.

"So, to get away from the daily routine of every day life, I have to do something totally different. Painting is something I choose because it's very solitude kind of work," he explained.

The summer/fall exhibit also features works from Winnipeg artists Jodi Hildebrand, Kathleen Black, Jayne Nixon, and Ann Tyre, as well as works from the Buffalo Creek Artists. The fall seasons runs until the end of September.
