Altona town council will hold its inaugural council meeting Tuesday evening on the heels of last week's municipal election.

The local governing body will have a 'new look' to it with a new mayor and four new council members.

Mayor designate Al Friesen says he's excited about working with the new council and feels this group has a good mix of people who care about the community.

"Ages range from mid 20s to 65 or so, we have males and a female councillor, we have business operators, we have wage earners and we have people who are retired. There is definitely a new look and there will be a learning curve, but there will also be a new sense of energy as well."

Friesen completed his first term as a town councillor this month and was elected as mayor by acclamation. He and councillors Glen Robinson and Donna Rosling Wolters, who were both re-elected, will have to share their experience with the newest members of council. They include Curt Letkeman, Harv Schroeder, Joel Penkewich, and Jordan Siemens.

"I think my number one goal will be to make sure that everyone's voice is heard ... and to make them feel that their opinion is of value," said Friesen. "Three of us have some history whereas the rest of us live in the same town where we may have volunteered together at various events or go to the same church and I think that type of commonality ... is going to help us pull together as a team."

All the members of council will come together officially for the first time on Tuesday afternoon where they will be sworn into office. Councillors will then elect a deputy mayor and will be given their various committee appointments as well.

"I'm looking forward to getting started. People that I have talked to have been encouraging and have said we need a champion for our town, someone who will promote our town. For me and the members of council, that will be one of our priorities going forward."
