An attempt to initiate a street-race with an off-duty cop didn't end well for one teenager.

Winkler Police report an off-duty officer was travelling southbound on Main Street when a vehicle passed the officer at a high rate of speed, cutting him off.

The two vehicles came to a stop at an intersection when a male passenger asked the officer, twice, to race. The officer produced his badge and police ID and pulled over the vehicle. On-duty officers were dispatched to the scene and issued the 18-year-old female driver a ticket for driving imprudently, and cautioned her that racing is dangerous and could result in a serious charge.

Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt says even if police aren't in the vicinity, members of the public often report illegal street racing. A description of the vehicle and licence plate number can often result in a ticket issued.

"We often write tickets as a result of a citizen witnessing an offence on the street," Hunt says.
