A Winkler woman received a rude awakening this past weekend.

On September 2 Winkler Police Service received a report of a Break, Enter and Theft at a residence on Main Street South.

The Winkler woman explained she awoke to find a suspect in her home, and chased him out of the residence.

The male suspect then stole her son's mountain bike and rode away.

The complainant also advised police she noticed a grainy substance by the gas cap of her vehicle which appeared to be sugar or a similar substance. The suspect and the complainant are believed to be known to each other.

Police report the file is still under investigation.

During this time period the police service opened 98 files. The following are some of those files.

August 28

Police received a report at approximately 12:30am of a fight that had occurred between two groups of people at Tim Horton’s. The caller stated one of the groups had already left however one male from the other group, whom he believed to be intoxicated, was seated in a gray van and appeared to be bleeding. Police attended the scene to find that the gray van had already left, and police were unable to locate the vehicle.

A complaint was received on August 28 of a suspicious male who had been in the campground women’s washroom at approximately 4:00am on August 27. Multiple witnesses stated the male was bleeding from a cut on his head and had told them he was from the USA and was attempting to charge his phone in the washroom. It was determined this was a simple matter of confusion and not related to any recent investigations.

A report was received of a vehicle travelling into Winkler that was weaving all over the road. Police attended to the area but did not locate the suspect vehicle.

A resident of Majestic Crescent reported that her vehicle was rummaged through sometime during the night while parked on her driveway. Two pairs of sunglasses were stolen from the unlocked vehicle.

August 29

Police received a report of vandalism to a vehicle that was parked near Park Street on August 27. The complainant stated he found a large dent on the vehicle, and suspected that a ball may have caused the damage. Police have no suspects at this time.

Police were notified of a young girl who appeared to be alone on the parking lot of a local business. Police arrived to find the young girl already with her mother who lived across the street.

August 30

A resident of Park Street reported that there was a young child in the area that had been screaming for over an hour. Police attended and remained in the area for a period of time, but the only noise that was heard was children playing across the street.

August 31

A motor vehicle accident involving two vehicles occurred at the intersection of Roblin Boulevard East and Norquay Drive. It was determined that a southbound vehicle entered the intersection when it was not safe to do so, and was struck by an eastbound vehicle. A ticket for Proceed Before Safe to Do So was issued to the driver of the southbound vehicle. This accident did not result in any injuries.

September 1

Police received a complaint from a male who stated the back window of his truck was smashed while he was parked at the Winkler Arena. There are no suspects at this time.

A report was received of a male who smelled strongly of alcohol leaving a business in a white van. Officers attended to the area but were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.

September 2

Police received a report of a Break, Enter and Theft to a residence on Main Street South. The complainant stated she awoke to find the suspect in her home, and chased him out of the residence. September 3

While on general patrol, police conducted a traffic stop at approximately 2:00am. While speaking with the male driver of the vehicle, police noted that his speech was slurred and he had a strong odour of liquor on his breath. The driver was read the demand to provide a roadside breath sample. The driver complied, which resulted in a Fail reading. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Winkler Police Service where he provided further breath samples of 160 mg% and 140 mg%. The legal limit is 80 mg%. The driver, age 20, is a resident of Winkler and has been charged with Impaired Driving and Driving over .08. He was later released on a Promise to Appear with conditions.

A report of a Break and Enter was received from a resident Scotia Drive who stated he awoke from a loud noise that sounded like something had hit his home. When he looked out his window, he could see two individuals standing in his fenced backyard near his garage window. The two individuals fled when they noticed the homeowner watching them. Police searched the backyard and surrounding area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Police were notified of graffiti containing offensive language that was found painted along two fences facing Roblin Boulevard during the night. There are no suspects at this time.

Several more reports of thefts from vehicles and thefts of bicycles were also received during this time period.

On Friday, the 1st of September, officers not on regularly scheduled shifts conducted Manitoba Public Insurance Checkstops in three Winkler locations between the hours of 6:00pm and 2:30am. The Checkstop locations were the intersection of 15th Street and Roblin Boulevard, the Maranatha Church and the intersection of Circle K Drive and PTH 14. The results were one charge for breaching probation, one charge for impaired driving, one drug related and one alcohol related driver’s license suspension, and one charge for carrying liquor in a vehicle.
