With the long weekend coming near its end, motorists are warned to stay safe on the way home from any road trips. RCMP Sergeant Mark Hume says there are stiff penalties for traffic violations.

"If you're picked up for impaired driving, the consequences are very severe," he notes. "A first-time offence for impaired driving ranges from $1,500 to a $2,000 fine. It can result in jail-time or an increased fine if the circumstances are even more dangerous."

Hume adds you just need to pay attention in general. With the increased heavy flow of traffic Monday, he urges you to be hyper-vigilant, and don't consider racing to your destination by passing everyone on the road.
