The federal budget was announced today by the Trudeau government.

Portage-Lisgar MP and Conservative House Leader Candice Bergen says the budget doesn't benefit Canadian families.

"This is a budget that will make bankers, Bay Street, bondholders very happy," says Bergen. "It does absolutely nothing for Canadian families. It is again, massive spending.

Portage-Lisgar MP and Conservative House Leader, Candice Bergen (File Photo) Frankly I don't think we've ever seen a Prime Minister spend so much money and get so little in results for Canadians. So, I'm very disappointed in the massive spending with no results."

Bergen says in combination with the government and crown corporations, the country will be in debt over a trillion dollars by 2019. She notes the deficit is three times higher than what Trudeau promised.

Ultimately Bergen thinks the Liberal government has failed on every front.

"I think the best way you can help families, and really put people before the government is to cut taxes for Canadians," Bergen says. "8 out of 10 families today pay more in taxes than they did two years ago when Conservatives were in government. If you look at what the liberals have done where they've taken away so many of the tax breaks that we gave to families, it's no doubt. So I certainly had hoped we would see some tax relief for Canadian families, we didn't see that."

Bergen says she's still concerned with the increase in funding for the Canada Summer Jobs Program because the government is restricting who can receive the money if they don't agree with government policies.

Another downside Bergen noticed with the budget is that rural Canada and agriculture was virtually ignored, with only some money announced for trade missions. She adds nothing was announced to support farmers, research or development.
