Local truckers showed their true colours and big hearts this Saturday at 'Big Rigs Big Hearts'.

The 5th annual truck rally raised money for the Alexander Sawatzky family and STARS Air Ambulance. In total the event raised $20,000, split evenly between STARS and the Sawatzkys.

The event was held at Main Plaza in Winkler and featured a record breaking 128 rigs, as well as food vendors, children's entertainment, and the annual convoy through the city.

Dan Sawatzky, the father of Alexander and one of the recipients of the fundraiser, explained truckers are sometimes labeled with a negative stereotype while they work hard to bring needed supplies and products across the country.

"Hats off to them. These guys are out there, they're plugging in some serious hours away from their families putting food on their tables, and ours," Sawatzky said.

He also thanked the community who came together to support them both in prayer and financially after the passing of his son.

"As soon as people started hearing what was going on, a lot of people right away started dropping to their knees and started praying... We legitimately believe that the prayers are the only thing that kept us going through it."
