Reusable bags, created by a volunteer group in Altona, are officially being used at the community's library.

Around 15 volunteers gathered at W.C. Miller Collegiate in Altona on Wednesday evening to help create more bags. Jobs included screen printing, ironing, sewing, and cutting.

"We just launched at the library," said spokesperson and Home Economics teacher Connie Heppner-Mueller. "We'd like to see how it goes and get some feedback."

The goal is to reduce, and hopefully even eliminate, the use of plastic bags in the community. "We're hoping to provide an alternative," she said.

The bags may eventually come to other locations in Altona as well but will focus on smaller businesses for now.

"I'm not sure that the grocery stores are within our grasp," explained Heppner-Mueller. "We were hoping at the beginning, but now that we've seen what it takes to get the bags made I think we would need thousands and thousands."

The cost involved in making the bags is fairly low, as the group uses donated material or purchase it from the thrift store. However, some money is needed for thread and screen printing. Last year the group received a $1,200 grant from the Altona Community Foundation.

Heppner-Mueller added the idea came from a video she saw on facebook and thought it would be great for the town.

"As usual the Altona and area community is fantastic at showing up, helping out, donating. This area is known for their generosity," she said.
