Border Land school trustees have reorganized for the coming year and have selected somone familiar to lead the board over the next year.

At Wednesday's reorganizational meeting, trustees elected Craig Smiley as their board chair. Smiley has held that position for 11 of the 17 years he's been on the board.

"It's a great honour. The trustees gave me another year as chair and we have a fantastic board and I'm forward to the coming year."

Mark Krahn is the only new trustee at the table, leaving a very experienced school board in place for the next four years, but Smiley is OK with that.

"That's a fantastic thing considering what the provincial government has been talking about. I think having a veteran board is very important at this time."

Smiley is referring to the provincial government's plan to conduct an extensive review of how education is delivered and funded in Manitoba.

The review would be broad in scope, looking at taxation, provincial funding and potential amalgamations of school divisions.

"We just don't know what's coming because they're not coming out and telling us what's coming, which is a little frustrating. There's lots of speculation, but no one really knows what the plan is."

Regardless of where that review goes, Smiley says Border Land School Division will continue to focus on students and providing them with the best kind of programming possible.
