Comparing 2016 to 2017, the number of births at Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC) has remained steady.

931 babies were born in 2017, down 5 from the year before. So far the highest number of babies born in one year at the hospital was 987, that was in 2015.

Director of Health Services at BTHC, Angie Cusson says if the beginning of this year is any indication of what's to come, that number could be higher this year.

Cusson said, as of February 11th, 129 babies have already been born.  "So there's a possibility that if we keep pace, we could potentially see our numbers increase in 2018," said Cusson.  "Whether or not that hits 1,000 will depend a lot on how many people come through our doors."

Meanwhile, Cusson says BTHC has been able to expand its obstetrics program to now include delivering twins.

"We have two obstetrics and gynaecology specialists who are extraordinary at what they do, and our obstetrics team is amazing as well," said Cusson.  "They are ready to go and we've been able to expand our service that way, and we're very happy to be able to do that."

Cusson said high-risk twin pregnancies will still be referred to Winnipeg, however, they are now in a position to offer delivery of low-risk twins.

Since starting planned delivery of low-risk twins, Cusson noted they have already had one set born at BTHC this year.
