Roads

The Town of Carman is putting a Municipal Road Improvement grant to good use.

Mayor Bob Mitchell explains the $100,000 paid for some milling and overlaying of streets in the north end of town; 7th St. NW, 1st AVE NW and Boyne Crescent. He says the total cost of the project came in around $300,000 as milling and overlay work usually costs about $35,000 per block.

Meantime, the Mayor says word on the street is that Highway 13 through town may not get redone next year as hoped. However he isn't getting too upset about the news quite yet, and is waiting to hear an official update from the province.

Dutch Elm

Dutch Elm removal is in full swing in Carman. Mayor Mitchell says there are over one hundred trees that crews are supposed to take out this fall.

He adds Council is considering a review of the yearly Dutch Elm Removal Agreement it has with the province. "It's not turning into a real fun thing for our guys, it takes a lot of time and costs a lot of money."

Mitchell expects more discussion on this agreement to unfold at the annual Association of Manitoba Municipalities convention later this month in Winnipeg.

Railway Crossing

A request from Carman Co-op to install a rail crossing in town has been turned down by Council.

"The Co-op wants to get an access to the back of the premises from the south side by the town shop," explains Mitchell. He says to do this Co-op needed to go across a rail line and therefore required the crossing. "But in the end, there's no room there. This is to get big trucks in to load and unload, we didn't feel there was sufficient room to be able to make the turning."

Mitchell says trucks will have to continue coming on and off the lot from the other side, noting this is do-able it just takes a bit more maneuvering.
