The Carman-Dufferin Planning District has approved a medical marijuana production facility by-law.

According to George Gray, reeve for the R.M. of Dufferin, the by-law would allow such a building to be constructed within three designated areas. Two spots are the Industrial-Heavy Zone in the Carman Industrial Park and in the R.M. of Dufferin Industrial Park east of Carman. Gray explained the third designated area is the Commercial Agriculture zone with one located east and another south of Carman along Highway 3.

Applications coming to the planning district table would still need to obtain a conditional use permit in order to proceed.

The Carman-Dufferin Planning District hasn't heard any valid interest in building a medical marijuana production facility in the area, said Gray, but he did offer a reason for approving this by-law now.

"It's always nice to get ahead of the curve and make sure, if there was interest and it did make sense, we're ready to go," he noted.
