Some trees in Carman's downtown have been spared, for now.

A committee has been struck to further explore a sidewalk reconstruction/beautification plan for the area after much backlash over a Town Council decision to remove about eighteen trees in order to properly replace sidewalks along 1st Street Southwest.

Opponents included the Carman Garden Club, Carman and Community Chamber of Commerce, business owners and other rate payers. The group argued that the trees provided an inviting environment for shoppers and others visiting downtown, as well as offered shade for businesses on the street.

Each town councillor will serve on this committee, which will have its first meeting Tuesday morning. The group will be required to complete a comprehensive report and submit it to Council within a month.
