Some changes have been made to the structure of Altona's Police Board.

Mayor Melvin Klassen said the makeup of the board has been slightly adjusted. Just one member will now represent town council on the board, instead of two.

"We still have a 5 member board. One is appointed by the government, and then we have one appointed by our council, and then we have 3 members appointed at large, and one of those members appointed at large is from Plum Coulee and then we have 2 from Altona," said Klassen.

Klassen explained the changes reflect greater representation from the public at large and less from town council. He added the intent is to provide the least amount of political interference into police activities as possible.

"As far as the Police Board are concerned we still control the budget, council does, but otherwise the Police Board does most of the work as far as the policing is concerned in the town," he said.

Town council controlling the budget is important since council still has to answer to the local electorate. Overall, Klassen said he feels comfortable with the change.

"We feel that our Police Board has done a tremendous job of setting itself up, in fact I'm being told that we are ahead of the game as far the province is concerned," said Klassen.
