From tracking down thieves in his pajamas to champion downtown revitalization, George Klassen has always aimed to serve his community.

His work hasn't gone unnoticed. Last night he was honoured as the 38th Winkler Citizen of the Year.

The former General Manager of Winkler Co-op reminisced about confronting late night thieves as a manager of the Lowe Farm Co-op and teaching life lessons to young customers.

However, he credits his success over the years to his parents, "they lived a life of service" he says, adding they instilled the same passion in their children.

Klassen was also described as a man who looked to his faith for direction, "God is his anchor"

Klassen was also described as a man who looked to his faith for direction.

He thanked God, "Who has allowed me the privilege of serving this community."

Giving back to the community also comes in many forms, he says, encouraging others to continue their good work.

As a community leader, Klassen was also instrumental in making the Winkler Chamber and Winkler Harvest Festival more self-sufficient and financially sustainable.

Changing for the sake of change is unnecessary, Klassen says, "but if we can improve something... then go for it."

In the end, he encouraged people to simply help others.

"Life is just so much better when you're actually helping somebody out there, that should be the goal," he said.

As Citizen of the Year, Klassen was able to give the $1,000 Citizen of the Year Choice Grant to The Bunker youth ministry.

"The Bunker does such a wonderful job with students," he says.

The chef has gone on to international acclaim for his talent in creating unique sauces.

Business acumen manifested early for Fehr; at a young age he began selling corn from his family's farm.

However, he credits the RRTVA culinary program in Altona for nurturing his passion for cooking.

His products are in more than 100 stores across Canada.
