The City of Winkler and officials with the Garden Valley School Division will soon sit down to go over details of a traffic impact study.

In 2017, Dillon Consulting was hired to help meet provincial regulations mandating an assessment and the implementation of necessary traffic control measures are done before any new school is allowed to open.

"Part of that study includes looking at existing traffic that's generated in the area, as well as what we're expecting 10 years from now, and what is the impact both pre and post-school development," said Director of Planning and Engineering for the City of Winkler, Scott Toews. If any impacts are anticipated, Toews said the study also recommends some improvements that can be made to mitigate some traffic delays as well as pedestrian safety in the area.

In early March, Toews says they will meet with GVSD to go over some the preferred solutions for the traffic as well as pedestrian improvements. "We want to make sure that everyone will be able to get to and from the school safely, and we will begin the plans to communicate that information to the broader public."

Toews says Dillon Consulting looked at a number of scenarios on improvements, specifically at the Roblin Boulevard and 15th Street intersection, which will have the largest impact from the school development.

"Once we've had a chance to talk to GVSD as the primary stakeholder, more of that information will become available, and we'll have a clearer picture of the path forward."
