A 'mortgage burning ceremony' was recently celebrated in Lowe Farm.

During the annual winter carnival earlier this month, the community took time to acknowledge that the $160,000 outdoor skating rink is now paid off.

"The community decided 5 years ago to construct an outdoor skating rink," said RM of Morris Reeve Ralph Groening. "The people involved decided that they would make an event of it, to signify the completion of a really significant local event."

Groening said there was substantial community support for the project, which began in 2012.

"It started with a Community Places grant, the RM of Morris was involved, local business, sponsors were involved, and volunteer efforts on the part of many people in the community. Great success story."

Committee member Don Groening, who floods the ice every year, said the pledges for the rink came to an end this year.

"We had kind of a 5-year pledge commitment from various businesses in our community and individuals," he explained.

Don said the rink has been getting good use, and saw a lot of activity during their winter carnival.

"Definitely gives the kids in our community something to do on those nicer evenings," he added.
