The agreement is only set to expire in 2020, but the conversation of future police service in Plum Coulee is already being talked about.

Currently, the town falls under the jurisdiction of the Altona Police Service, however, the deal was struck prior to Plum Coulee's amalgamation with the Municipality of Rhineland. Legislation dictates that a municipality should be policed by a single agency, putting the current deal in jeopardy once it runs out.

Reeve Don Wiebe feels the arrangement with the Altona Police Service has worked quite well and Council would like to see it continue, however, he says Manitoba Justice has been slow in responding to inquiries.

"It's fairly complicated because it doesn't fit into the existing legislative framework and there are only two such situations in Manitoba."

Nevertheless, Wiebe explained that Council's first option would be to continue with the current arrangement. If that's not possible, he said Council will still want to have some notion of community policing in Plum Coulee and noted that could include looking at what the RCMP could offer. Prior to merging with the Municipality of Rhineland, Plum Coulee previously fell under RCMP jurisdiction before reaching a population threshold requiring further policing services.

"We hate to go back on this...because it's worked so well for Plum Coulee," said Wiebe.

He added this comes down to an amalgamation issue.

"We always like to argue that you shouldn't lose what you already have and that's why we are pushing for some semblance of what we have now."

Wiebe admits that having the Altona Police Service look after the entire Municipality of Rhineland has come up as an option.

"That's been talked about but Plum Coulee gets support, there's a grant that you can use for policing, right now there's no provision for Rhineland to get any kind of provincial support for policing so that makes that question a little difficult."
