Following Justin Trudeau's Throne Speech on Wednesday, when Parliament finally opened up again, Conservative Deputy Leader and Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen wasn't happy.

Bergen explains that the closing of Parliament claimed to be for reasons that were never followed through.

"What stood out was how it lacked any kind of a plan for Canadians overall to deal with the pandemic," says Bergen. "The Prime Minister shut down parliament and he prorogued, and he said the reason he did that is that he was going to present a plan to Canadians on how to deal with the second wave of this pandemic; how to deal with Canadians' concerns around their health, around job losses. And there was none of that. This speech, as most people saw, as many of the commentators said and we saw, was just another rehash of all of the old Liberal promises that they've been promising for years -- in some cases decades -- and not delivering results on. So, we were not impressed with it."

She notes Conservatives believe the shut-down of parliament was to get attention away from Trudeau's involvement in the WE scandal that had been plaguing him, as well as avoiding the need to see committees start up again. Bergen explains nothing about the Throne Speech will actually help Canadians.

"Our House Leader and new House Leader has done some negotiating, and we hope that those committees get started again," adds Bergen. "They are important, and if the government wants to pass legislation, obviously, they need committees operating. But there are just so many Canadians who are left behind; you know, people who can't afford to wait for days and weeks to get tested. They've got the sniffles, or their kids aren't feeling well and they have to stay home from school just in case it's COVID. They want to get tested quickly and get those results. The premiers were asking the Prime Minister to please give them some funding because they are bearing the brunt of this health crisis and funding for the provinces on health care is at an all-time low."

Bergen says the Prime Minister just ignored the need for this funding, adding her party is not at all impressed with this edition of the Speech from the Throne, and feel that the Liberals could have done better.

She outlines how her party will move forward now that they know what was involved with the speech.

"I think what we've recognized is that there's only one party that is concerned with national unity, and that's Conservative," continues Bergen. "So, we want the west, and Canadians in the west, to know that what Canadians do in the west is valuable. Whether you're an oil and gas worker, whether you're a forestry worker, or an agricultural producer -- a farmer, you are valuable. And as Conservatives, we support you. It's clear the Liberals don't. They didn't mention those sectors. In a 7000-word speech, there was one mention of natural resources, and jobs are being lost in that sector."

Bergen explains they also recognized the overall fiscal responsibility is simply absent with the Liberals. She says they want to just spend without restraint. Bergen notes they spoke about increasing taxes on Canadians and the document made some reference to how the government will go into debt so that Canadians don't have to go into debt.

"Well, when the government goes into debt, Canadians are the ones who are left having to pay off the bill," says Bergen. "As Conservatives, we know this. We recognize it and we are going to be not only holding this government to account, but showing Canadians that we are a compassionate and ethical and professional government in waiting, that will learn from the mistakes of the past that these Liberals have made and promote and enact policies that will help Canadians through this pandemic."
