The Sperling Fire Department received a boost this weekend with the third annual Dart Tournament Fundraiser.

"It came to the point at the end of the year we couldn't even give the volunteer fire department a Christmas dinner," fundraiser organizer Garry Kelly says. "So I said, "things have got to change.'"

Since the event's genesis three years ago they've been able to better outfit the fire department, including acquiring a new jaws of life.

The department runs on a $30,000 budget and operates two fire trucks.

"To keep everyone suited up and provide the equipment they need we run a really tight budget," he says.

Kelly also thanked one of their major sponsors D.A Loewen Electric, and noted the support of the late Garry Berg.

He says their thoughts are prayers remain with the family and friends of the Bergs who passed suddenly earlier this month.

In total, organizers expect to raise approximately $5,000 for the local fire department.

The event took place Sperling Community Hall on Friday. Part of the proceeds also went to the Sperling Community Club. Submitted photos
