An off-leash dog park may be open as earlier as this summer in Winkler.

After a number of stalled attempts in recent years, a new committee (formed last year) is on the home stretch.

"We're hoping with corporate sponsorship and fundraising we'll have it up in July... we're being optimistic," Martha Olfert says.

The City of Winkler recently provided a parcel of land adjacent to the Water Treatment Plant and the community gardens.

The dog park will be located next to the Water Treatment Plant in Winkler North of PTH 14

Olfert notes the addition rounds out the area that's quickly becoming a tourist stop. The Winkler Horticultural Society continues to develop the Pioneer Park North of PTH 14, making it the perfect place for travellers to stop for a break and let their pets stretch their legs as well.

Committee members Martha Olfert and Trudy Wall explain they redoubled their efforts this spring after an initial plan to build on 14th street fell through.

"With all the dog owners we have in the city we thought this would be a natural thing to happen," Olfert says. "And a lot of people are happy not to have it in their backyard, some people were concerned, but this satisfies those people as well."

Wall notes the dog park will also have a smaller fenced meeting area for dogs to greet other animals and make sure there are no signs of aggression or behavioural issues before entering.

"It's just a great place for people to socialize their dogs," she says.

Fundraising is the next step for moving the project forward. The group plans a fundraiser BBQ May 27 at the Winkler Park with groomers on-site providing nail trimming for dogs, a silent auction, homemade dog treats for sale, and a dog costume contest.

The group also encourages dog owners to take the time to ensure their pets are licensed. The city offers licences for a one-time fee of $25 for the life of the animal.

Committee members Martha Olfert and Trudy Wall say they are already receiving strong support for the project from local businesses
