After a number of years of not being able to fulfill a request to bring its programming to Altona, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morden and Winkler is now celebrating its one year anniversary in the community.

Executive Director Michael Penner says over the past few years the organization has been able to build its capacity and its budget, allowing them to implement their programs in Altona.  Programs were initially offered at a smaller capacity last fall, but that is about to change.

Beginning this month, Penner says they will be expanding what they do in Altona, offering all programs they deliver elsewhere.  "It's really nice to see it come to fruition," said Penner.  "It was a dream of mine to get there, and you never know how long these things are going to take.  But we're glad to be here."

Penner said the expansion of the program is thanks in part to a grant they secured, but also the support the community of Altona has shown and given them.  "Not just in financial ways, but also volunteering as well."

Programs being offered include one on one mentoring relationships in the community, in school programs consisting of either one on one ,as well as group programs like 'Go Girls.'

Penner says mentoring is a very impactful relationship, and he's privileged to be able to see positive stories all the time of how mentoring impacts the life of a child, how they grow and change, and increase in confidence.  "And it does impact the life of the 'Big' as well.  They grow, and they essentially make a friend for life.  It's a very neat dynamic and relationship."

Meanwhile, a bike riding event coming up in just over a week will help support the Big Brothers Big Sisters expansion into Altona.  The event being dubbed the "Trans Canada Challenge" will take participants on a 21km ride along the Trans Canada Trail, starting in Altona.  Cyclists will also have the option of a 10.5 km ride.

Organizer Kerri Bennett explains a lunch will also be provided after the race.
