The 16th annual Legends Car Club “Drive for Cancer” fundraiser took place last Saturday, and raised more money than in the past two years.

The event, which is a fundraiser for South Central Cancer Resource, accepted over $13,700 in donations. Last year, the event raised around $12,000, and approximately $9,000 in 2015.

Although some larger donations are responsible for reaching the final donation mark, Legends Car Club co-chair Lyle Dunsmore said most of the donations are from people giving money at places such as coffee shops, grocery stores and church.

“I would say 80 per cent of the money that comes in from the [total amount] is probably [donated] 15 or 20 dollars at a time,” said Dunsmore, emphasizing how small amounts can lead to a greater outcome.

With the event being a success, Dunsmore said he is always amazed by the community's generosity.

“When the need is there, somebody makes sure that the money is there... if everybody does a little bit, nobody has to do a lot,” he said.

The Drive for Cancer not only allows community connections to be made, but participants are able to get a more in-depth taste of what southern Manitoba holds. This year's route took over 40 classic cars to visit stops in Winkler, Somerset, Morden and Altona, where drivers bonded over a barbecue supper and warm weather.

In the future, Dunsmore said he hopes the fundraiser is able to reach a donation amount of $20,000, as has happened in the past.
