Provencher MP Ted Falk says the new federal budget is a slap in the face for rural Canada . Falk explains the big deficit means future generations will have to pay for the lifestyle we are enjoying today and says that is just wrong.

More specific to his riding, Falk was disappointed the budget did not address the issue of more resources to deal with asylum-seekers crossing the border near ports like Emerson.

"There's been no new money allocated in the budget for additional RCMP, the Canada Border Services Agency or CSIS (Canada Security Intelligence Service) to deal with border security issues. That's going to be an ongoing issue for our country and I think we're going to continue to see folks wanting to come into Canada illegally. It would have been nice to see some funding allocated for resources to help deal with that situation."

Falk is also disappointed the government scrapped the Canada Savings Bond program saying it should have been used to allow ordinary Canadians to fund the country's debt as long as there was a decent rate of return.

Another item in the budget that Falk's attention was a change in the maternity leave program.

"The one good tweak that they've made there is they've opened up the eligibility from eight weeks prior to birth to 12 weeks. We know there are situations where pregnancies are sometimes difficult and people need to leave their places of employment sooner than they had anticipated. Giving mothers the opportunity to start collecting EI (Employment Insurance) benefits 12 weeks before the anticipated birth instead of 8, I think that's positive. The negative thing about the changes is that they've extended the benefits up to 18 months if an individual chooses that option. What's negative is that the benefit goes down to 33% from 55% of their wage. If you do the math, it's considerably less money in total, taking out 33% over 18 months than taking 55% over 12 months."

Overall, Falk says the budget touched on a lot of ideas but provided no plans or details about how the government will accomplish its goals.
