A resident of Winnipeg was arrested in Winkler over the weekend after being charged for assaulting his 11 year old son. On August 11th, while on foot patrol at the Winkler Harvest Festival, police were approached and notified of an assault that had taken place.

Police learned that one of the vendors of the festival had assaulted his 11 year old son.

The father was placed under arrest for Assault and transported to the Winkler Police Service. A friend of the suspect approached police and offered to take care of the suspect's son.

The 55 year old male, a resident of Winnipeg, was released on a Promise to Appear with conditions.

Child and Family Services was also contacted as a result of the incident.

During this time period our police service opened 49 files. The following are some of those files.

August 8, police received a report at 12:19 a.m of loud music on Main Street South, either coming from a vehicle or from a residence. The caller stated this has happened more than once in the recent past. Police attended and patrolled the area but could not hear any music.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m police received a call reporting that three boys just rang the doorbell of the complainant's home on Shelby Bay. The caller stated this had also happened several other nights. Police searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Police were advised of an assault taking place. The caller stated that a truck stopped near a group of people walking on the street, and the driver exited his vehicle and started fighting with someone in the group. The male then left the scene in his truck, however the group of people remained on the sidewalk. Officers attended and spoke with the victim. It was determined the fight was over an unpaid debt and the two parties were known to each other. The victim refused to provide the name of the suspect and declined to press charges.

On August 9, a wheel barrow was reported stolen from outside of a local restaurant during the early morning hours of August 7th. There are no suspects at this time.

A complaint was received from the Winkler Recreation Department who reported damage to some of the hanging planter baskets and flowers located at the Parkview Gardens on Grandeur Avenue. To date there are no suspects.

August 10 at approximately 11:00 p.m, police were notified of an assault that had taken place. Police attended to the scene and spoke with the female victim, whom police observed to have visible injuries. The female told police that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend, who had already left the residence. She provided police with a description of the male suspect and his vehicle. The female was transported to the Boundary Trails Health Centre to receive medical attention for her injuries. Police later located the male suspect, who was subsequently placed under arrest for Assault Causing Bodily Harm. Police also noted visible injuries on the male, and it was confirmed that he was assaulted by his girlfriend. Both parties, a 37 year old male and a 30 year old female were served a Promise to Appear with conditions.

On August 11, police observed a vehicle reverse into another vehicle in a parking lot, and attended to make sure the driver was aware of her obligation to leave her particulars before leaving the scene. As police were speaking to the driver, a strong odour of marijuana was detected coming from inside the vehicle. The driver and passenger were asked to exit the vehicle and provide their information. The passenger of the vehicle refused to provide her information. She was advised that she was under arrest for Possession of a Controlled Substance. The female resisted arrest and attempted to flee from police, however police were able to arrest the female. The driver of the vehicle was also placed under arrest for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Upon a search of the vehicle police discovered numerous items of drug paraphernalia and a quantity of marijuana. Police also discovered four sealed cans of liquor inside the driver’s backpack which was located inside the trunk of the vehicle. The two females were transported to the Winkler Police Service. The driver of the vehicle, a 17 year old female, received warnings for possessing marijuana and possessing liquor as a minor. She was released without charges to her mother. The vehicle passenger, a 17 year old female, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Resist Arrest. She was issued a Promise to Appear, and released into the care of her father.

Police received a report of a group of people drinking alcohol in three vehicles parked behind the Southland Mall. Police attended and located a group of males on the parking lot. Police observed an open case of liquor behind the driver’s seat in one of the vehicles, along with an open can of liquor on the front passenger floor. Upon a further search of the vehicle, several items of drug paraphernalia and a quantity of marijuana were discovered. The owner of the vehicle was given a verbal warning for possession of marijuana, and was issued a ticket for Unlawful Transportation of Liquor in a Motor Vehicle. The owners of the other two vehicles were also issued tickets for Unlawful Transportation of Liquor in a Motor Vehicle.

On August 13, during a traffic stop, police observed a quantity of marijuana inside the stopped vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, a 20 year old male, was subsequently arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. The male was under conditions to not possess illegal drugs and was subsequently charged with Breach Probation.

Police received a report of two vehicles parked in a campsite and that the occupants were being very loud. Police attended and found a large number of people who were not registered to the campsite and had been consuming liquor. The occupants were asked to leave as they were disturbing the other campers, to which they complied.

While on patrol police observed open liquor inside a parked vehicle. Police noted a male in the driver’s seat as well as a male standing at the back of the vehicle. Police spoke with the male at the back of the vehicle and observed several empty cans of beer and one partial can. Both males were placed under arrest for Consume Liquor in a Public Place. The driver of the vehicle was read the demand to provide a roadside breath sample, to which he complied. The driver blew a .010 and had a Zero Blood Alcohol Content license. The driver was also found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The male driver was given a warning for the possession of marijuana and was issued a ticket for Carry Liquor in a Vehicle, as well as a Zero BAC suspension of his license. Both males were then released.
