During the week of the 2017 Esso Cup National Female "AAA" Midget Hockey championship held in Morden, the local Fire Department made a connection with one of the girls playing on the Atlantic representative the Mid-Isle Wildcats.

Danielle Gallant is one of the goaltenders for the Wildcats and is also the junior fire chief at the fire department in her hometown of Miscouche. Gallant's father was a volunteer firefighter in the community, until his unfortunate passing. She explained that in 2015 her father was on his way home from a fire call, got into an accident and passed away.

Upon hearing the story Morden Fire Chief Andy Thiessen felt there was a need to do something for this firefighter family.

"I think the fire service is kind of unique. It doesn't matter where that fire service is across the province or country, we hurt for them or we are joyous for them. This was one of those cases where this fire family in Morden needs to look after that fire family in P.E.I.," said Thiessen. "I was kind of throwing a few ideas around in my head and came up with a couple of pieces of swag pieces that we have at the hall that we could give to them."

Thiessen went on to say it was in between periods when he went back to the fire hall and picked up the gift. The team was waiting to head back to the ice for the third period and he had asked the coach if he could speak with Gallant after the game and he agreed.

Not only did Gallant start in goal that day, but she earned the Atlantic player of the game after kicking aside 31 of the 34 shots she faced.

Thiessen approached her after the game as they had agreed upon and shared how he had found out about her story.

"I understand you are on the fire department back home and then she lit up and said she was part of the junior fire program there and that she was the junior fire chief of the program," said Thiessen. "I said I'm the fire chief here and said, someone, has kind of told me about your story. I told her that the fire family here cares about you and we want you to have this gift."

The gift was a Morden Fire hoodie, a t-shirt, and badge.

"At the time I was kind of emotional because that was the last thing on my mind and last thing I was going to expect," said Gallant.

Her late father was also the trainer for her team since her atom year and was always her number one fan.

Gallant stated it was cool to see a different fire family show their support.

"We realized after Mike's (her late husband) death that the firefighters are another family that is there to support us," said Danielle's mother Linda Gallant. "Everyone reached out to us and we realized how much they are there for you. Ever since Mike's death, they've been very supportive. Like we say we have like three families. We have our own family, our hockey family, and our fire family. Just knowing that they are there to support us no matter what and go across the country and feel a part of the community. It's very touching and gives us a lot of support and I think we both really appreciate it."
