A skeleton crew of seven fire fighters spent a good part of the day on Tuesday stamping out flames at the Altona/Rhineland landfill north of town.

According to Fire Chief Greg Zimmerman, the call came in around 8 a.m. and crews were just finishing up at around 1:30 p.m. At that point, he said 25,000 gallons of water had already been used to fight the fire.

There's no word on what started the blaze.

Zimmerman says the small crew was used to ensure fire fighters and equipment was still available in case of another emergency.
